For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved being near or on water. In my family water brings people together. It’s a cabin with 60 plus (and counting) years of memories made. It’s a home that’s always welcomed others. It’s a place to gather, slow down and beconnected. To watch the sunrise and set. It’s depth. It’s reflection. It’s therapeutic.
Simply staring at a body of water can change our brain wave frequency pulling us into a mild meditative state. Being near the water triggers the release of neurochemicals like dopamine and serotonin, which can create feelings of happiness and relaxation. Watching a sunrise or sunset releases the same chemicals. This is the stuff that has a lasting impact on our mood and brain. It’s the real dopamine hit.
Water can also bring healing. In the Bible it often represents cleansing, renewal and restoration. Hence when one gets baptized you are immersed in water. Made new.
And sometimes your family might call their favorite (alcoholic) drink Holy Water – at least mine does. This still brings people together.
